President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech late Thursday night that Russia would not relax its fighting stance in order to regain the territories it had taken from Russia.

“We have crossed the Oskir River. Since yesterday, we have taken control of the eastern bank,” the Ukrainian army said in a Telegram post on Thursday night.

“The Lugansk region is right next door.

A Ukrainian official said Russian forces had shelled towns and villages on the eastern and southern front lines on Saturday. Among other targets were civilian infrastructure in the city of Zaporozhye.

Britain’s defense ministry said the deteriorating war situation has prompted Russian forces to step up attacks on civilian infrastructure, which might lead to even more targets.

Ukrainian military officials said they had repelled Russian attacks in some areas, including Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. It also said it had hit several air defense facilities and ammunition depots.
