Ukraine Calls for International Air Defense Support Amid Russian Attacks on Port Infrastructure and Grain Depots

Following Russia’s repeated attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and grain depots, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for additional international air defense support. He did so on Wednesday night in his daily video message.

“Together with our partners, we are doing our best to speed up the delivery of air defense systems,” Zelensky said. “Every attack is a common problem.”

According to the Ukrainian head of state, the attacks in Moscow are aimed at causing “a global catastrophe”. Russians are speculating regarding a food crisis and rising food prices, which they might then profit from, Volodymyr Zelensky added. He called this strategy “very dangerous”.

In mid-July, Russia unilaterally withdrew from the so-called “grains” agreement. This agreement was brokered by Turkey and the United Nations following Russia invaded Ukraine last year. It allowed the resumption of exports of millions of tons of grain and other foodstuffs via the Black Sea, following Russia blocked Ukrainian ports. Since the agreement expired, tensions in the Black Sea have risen once more.
