According to the local governor, two people were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Russian region of Belgorod on the border with Ukraine. The region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said this on the online service Telegram on Saturday and added that these were civilians. The respective governors in other Russian regions also announced that they had been targeted that night.

According to the information, the Kursk, Kaluga and Bryansk regions, all of which are in western Russia, were affected. According to the governors, energy infrastructure was affected in Kaluga and Bryansk.

According to Russian information, a Ukrainian drone hit a fuel depot in western Russia during the night and set it on fire. The attack itself was repelled, the governor of Smolensk, Vasily Anokhin, said on Telegram. However, falling debris hit the depot and started the fire. It is unclear whether there were any injuries.

According to Ukrainian intelligence sources, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Russian territory overnight. At least three energy plants and a fuel depot were hit, an insider said. It was a joint operation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the military intelligence service (GUR) and special forces.

None of this information can be independently verified.

Meanwhile, in southeastern Ukraine, a war correspondent for the Russian newspaper “Izvestia” died in a Ukrainian drone attack, according to the paper. The 42-year-old was fatally shot on his return from a visit to a Russian unit in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the newspaper announced. Most recently, Semyon Eremin reported on the Russian side of the drone war.

Ukraine initially did not comment on the reporter’s death. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 15 journalists have died since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.
