The Ukrainian government apparently wants to depose its commander-in-chief, General Valery Zalushny, and, according to insiders, has informed the US presidential office about these plans. This was stated by two people familiar with the matter on Friday (local time). “The White House has expressed that it is up to Ukraine to make its own sovereign decisions about its personnel,” one of the insiders said.

There is currently no official statement from the White House. Zalushnyj had apparently clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over military strategy and other issues. In addition, the step is said to be the consequence of the unsuccessful Ukrainian counteroffensive last year, in which it was not possible to recapture significant parts of the territory held by Russia.

One of the insiders explained that Zelensky and the general had disagreed about a new military mobilization offensive, with the president rejecting Zalushny’s proposal to call up 500,000 new soldiers. β€œFor now, the status quo will be maintained until further notice,” the insider said.

The Washington Post was first to report that Ukraine is planning to fire its commander-in-chief and wants to communicate this to the US presidential office. Saluzhnyy had previously published a column on the US news channel CNN’s website on Thursday in which he wrote that the Ukrainian government had failed to mobilize enough troops. According to Western and Ukrainian media reports, Saluzhny rejected Zelensky’s request to resign this week.
