Ukraine announces new developments on the Russian side

kyiv, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian forces continued their major cross-border push into Russia’s Kursk region for a second week on Monday, saying they had seized more ground, captured more Russian prisoners and destroyed a bomber.

Since the start of the day, assault troops have advanced between one and two kilometers in some areas of Kursk, Ukrainian army commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a video shared on the Telegram channel of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukrainian troops also took more than 100 Russian soldiers prisoner yesterday, Syrskyi added.

Zelensky said they would be used to exchange them for Ukrainian prisoners of war.

The Ukrainian General Staff added that troops deployed in Kursk destroyed a Russian Su-34 aircraft used to drop devastating glide bombs on Ukrainian cities and positions on the front.

The unexpected entry of Ukrainian troops into Russian territory that began on Tuesday 6 shook the Kremlin. The audacious operation in Kursk is the largest attack on Russia since World War II and could involve up to 10,000 Ukrainian troops backed by armored vehicles and artillery, according to analysts. A state of emergency was declared in Kursk on Saturday.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said yesterday that kyiv has no intention of occupying the Russian territory it claims to control.
