The gas transmission system operator (GTS) of Ukraine announced “force majeure circumstances”, due to which, from May 11, it stops gas transit to Europe through the Sohranivka gas distribution station and the Novopskov compressor station in the Luhansk region. As the operator notes, almost a third of Russian gas supplies to Europe go through Novopskov.
The statement of the operator explains that as a result of the military operation of the Russian troops in Ukraine, a number of GTS facilities are located on the territory controlled by the Russian army. The OGTS statement states that the intervention of Russian forces in technological processes, changes in the operating modes of GTS facilities, including unauthorized gas withdrawals from the transit flow, “endangered the stability and security of the entire Ukrainian gas transportation system.”
For gas supplies to Europe, a temporary transfer of “inaccessible capacities” from Sokhranivka to the Sudzha connection point, which is located on the territory controlled by Ukrainian troops, is possible, the operator said. The report also states that the company repeatedly warned Gazprom regarding the termination of gas transit due to a military operation and demanded to stop interference in the operation of facilities, but these demands were ignored.
