Ukraine and Corona… an important warning from global health

The World Health Organization has warned of the serious health repercussions of the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, noting its role in the wider spread of the Corona virus.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a press briefing that “the ongoing conflict in Ukraine may lead to an increase in the outbreak of Covid 19,” noting that Ukraine “saw a significant increase in the number of cases infected with the coronavirus during the Russian attack.”

Ghebreyesus explained that low examination rates mean that there is likely to be a large undetected transmission of the virus, pointing out that “the low rate of vaccination represents a great danger, and raises the possibility of large numbers of people developing severe symptoms of the disease.”
