UK | World War II bomb exploded during defusing

Most defuses end with an all-clear, but this time things turned out differently: a bomb detonated in England while experts were working on it.

A WWII bomb exploded in east England during defusing operations. Police said Friday night the bomb went off in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, while bomb disposal crews were using a slow-burn technique to render it harmless. The bomb was found on the banks of the Yare River. The explosive device, weighing around 250 kilograms, was discovered during construction work on a new bridge.

Apparently nobody died: according to the information, none of those involved in the work was missing. The British BBC reported that there were no injuries, citing police statements. “Fortunately, all staff have been counted and authorities are now attempting to assess the damage to the river wall,” Norfolk Assistant Chief Constable Nick Davison was quoted as saying. People on social media reported hearing a loud bang miles away.

As the BBC further reports, the 250-kilogram bomb was discovered by a construction company. Army specialists had arrived and erected a sand barrier around the bomb as a security measure.
