The British Ministry of Defense reported this Sunday (12/24/2023) that the United Kingdom is preparing to send a warship to Guyana, a former British colony, due to tensions with neighboring Venezuela over the sovereignty of the region of Essequibo. The objective of the movement would be to give a “show of military and diplomatic support” by the country.

“HSM Trent will visit our regional allies and Commonwealth Guyana partners later this month as part of a series of engagements in the region during her Atlantic patrol deployment,” the spokesperson said. The announcement comes days following the visit to Guyana of the British Secretary of State for America and the Caribbean, David Rutley.

Essequibo is a territory of 160,000 square kilometers, rich in mineral and oil resources, it has been administered by Guyana as its own since 1966, but it is also claimed by Venezuela. The controversy escalated following Venezuela approved on December 3 in a unilateral referendum to annex Essequibo, and the Government of Nicolas Maduro order the settlement of a military division near the disputed area, among other measures.

A British Ministry of Defense spokesperson confirmed that HMS Trent, a British ship that had been deployed to the Caribbean to fight drug trafficking, has been redeployed following threats by Venezuela to annex Essequibo. In the statement, however, the border tensions between both South American countries are not mentioned.

Observers have warned of the danger that, if Venezuela invades that territory, it might trigger the most important armed conflict in South America since the Falklands War in 1982, although following a meeting of presidentsboth countries agreed to resolve the conflict without using military force and without escalating tensions.
