UK: Pakistani woman wins art competition on religious freedom

Almas Khanum from Tehsil Dargai of District Malakand of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has won the first position in the international competition on the topic of ‘Religious Tolerance and Freedom’ organized by a non-governmental organization in the UK.

These competitions were organized by British non-governmental organization Bullweather, in which artists from many countries were asked to submit their works on various themes.

In this regard, Pakistani artist Almas Khanum also sent a piece of art made by him for the competition. His artwork has won the first position in the category of ‘Religious Tolerance’.

Almas Khanum told Independent Urdu that ‘It is a matter of pride for me that my artwork on the subject of religious tolerance and freedom has been appreciated and awarded.

‘I have a deep connection with art and this is because most of my family members are artists.’

‘In art, I have also introduced new genre and I create works of art using needle, thread on chisel, which is loved by most people as it is a unique art form,’ she said.

In this competition, the award ceremony was held in the British Parliament and Almas Khanum was invited to the ceremony, but she could not attend.

She said: ‘I applied for a UK visa but due to time constraints I was not issued a visa and therefore could not attend the event.’

However, according to Almas, he made a virtual participation in this event and also addressed the event.

“My award was received by Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, and his wife Turpakkai, which is a matter of pride for me.”

About art in Pakistan, Almas said that ‘art in this country does not get as much importance as it should, because most people are not aware of its importance.’

‘Here art doesn’t get as much attention as it should, whereas in developed countries art is highly valued and given a lot of importance.’

Almas Khanum said: ‘Religious harmony means that followers of all religions can tolerate each other’s beliefs, culture and each other.’

According to the organizers of the competition, the first place winners in each category will be awarded 2,000 pounds (about five lakh Pakistani rupees), 1,500 pounds for the second place, and 1,000 pounds for the third place holders.
