New Coin Honors Paul McCartney‘s Music Legacy
A new five-pound coin is set to be released in the UK this Friday to commemorate the musical career of legendary musician Paul McCartney. The coin, a limited edition release, marks a unique tribute to a true icon of British music.
“When I was a kid, I never thought something like this would happen,” said 82-year-old McCartney, who collaborated with the Royal Mint on the coin’s design. The coin features elements inspired by McCartney’s illustrious career, including references to his “magic piano,” his musical notes, a violin, a bass guitar, and the emblem of Wings, the band he formed after the Beatles disbanded.
Rebecca Morgan, Head of Commemorative Coins at the Royal Mint, explained the significance of the coin: “Our work expresses a dedication to honoring icons and events in British history, so it’s important to celebrate Paul McCartney’s extraordinary musical career on an official British coin.”
The coin will be available in various editions on the Royal Mint website with prices starting at £15.50 ($19.60). “What makes this piece so special is that Paul was involved in the entire design process,” Morgan added. “The coin celebrates various elements of his career, and we hope his fans enjoy it.”
From Penny Strings to Golden Tribute
McCartney’s musical journey is intertwined with British currency. It is a little known fact that in the early days of his career, he used to strum his guitar strings with pennies, British legal tender. The Royal Mint even presented the singer-songwriter with a pick version of the new coin ahead of the European leg of his world tour. This playful gesture acknowledges both McCartney’s humble beginnings and his enduring legacy.
Building on this theme of commemoration, in early 2025, the Royal Mint will also auction a signed Paul McCartney gold coin. Weighing an impressive 5 kilograms, its creation involved over 250 hours of meticulous craftsmanship.
A Global Icon Still Touring
Most recently, McCartney concluded his “Got Back” tour in Latin America, where he performed for over 500,000 fans across eight countries. This prolific artist is now set to charm European audiences, with scheduled performances in Paris on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by concerts in Madrid, Manchester, and London to close out the year.
His tireless touring schedule and enduring popularity underscore the indelible mark Paul McCartney has left on the world of music. This new coin serves as a lasting tribute to his unparalleled contribution to British musical history and his enduring global influence.
