The UK might be among the first countries to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic, according to an expert.
Professor David Heymann, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), said the UK was starting to see endemic signs of the disease.
Speaking in an online briefing, he assured the UK was possibly one of the countries with the highest levels of population immunity in the world, as the Omicron wave rages on right now, particularly in Europe.
“This means immunity once morest severe forms and morbidity following infection if one is vaccinated, or following reinfection if one has already had the disease. This immunity of the population seems to keep the virus and its variants at bay, without causing very serious forms or death in countries where the immunity of the population is high “, he assured.
“I looked at the most recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) report on population immunity and they estimated that around 95% of the population in England has antibodies either through vaccination or through natural infection, “he continued.
“If you look in the intensive care units, you will see that unfortunately the majority of these people are not vaccinated,” he lamented.
Over 14 million cases and 150,000 deaths have been reported in total in the UK.
