UK imports of Moroccan berries have seen remarkable growth, increasing 40 times to a volume of 15,800 tonnes in the 2022/2023 growing season. This performance generated $86 million in revenue for Morocco, cementing its position as the leading supplier of fresh raspberries to the UK market.

Only a few years ago, the volumes of these berries from Morocco were insignificant or even non-existent on the British markets, especially during the 2017/2018 season. However, a drastic change took place after “Brexit”. Looking for alternatives among importing countries, the UK has seen Moroccan growers storm this newly opened segment, reports specialist site EastFruit.

Since then, raspberry imports to UK markets have grown steadily, each year setting new records in terms of delivery volumes. It should be noted that at the end of the year 2022, the United Kingdom rose to fifth place among the main world importers of fresh raspberries, indicates the same source.

In addition, during the 2022/2023 season, Morocco ensured an impressive 55% of deliveries of this product. As a result, the country proudly rose through the ranks to become the number one exporter of raspberries to the UK, overtaking Spain which had held this position for several years.

Recall that fresh raspberries play a major role in Morocco’s export category. Local producers have expanded the areas planted with berries, which has led to a significant increase in exports of this product, multiplied by 4.7 over the past six seasons. During the 2022/2023 season, more than 60,000 tons of fresh raspberries were shipped to international markets.

Thus, the Kingdom has strengthened its position among world exporters and rose to third place among the main suppliers of berries at the end of the 2022 calendar year, while in 2017, Morocco ranked sixth, says EastFruit.

The specialized portal also reports that fresh raspberries occupy the third position in terms of export revenue for the country, just after tomatoes and mandarins. Raspberry sales thus contributed to generating a revenue of $340 million during the same season.
