UK disappointed at Russia not extending Black Sea grain deal
(AFP, London, 17th) Britain expressed “disappointment” at the Moscow government’s statement hours before the expiration of the “Black Sea grain agreement” today that the agreement had been effectively terminated, and accused Russia of risking global “pain”. .
“That would obviously be very disappointing,” a spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told reporters following the Kremlin’s statement.
The spokesman added that Moscow “will deprive millions of people of access to vital grains”.
Russia and Ukraine are both the world’s largest grain producers. The deal allows Ukrainian grain to be exported via the Black Sea following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February.
The agreement was initially signed in Istanbul, Turkey in July last year under the mediation of Turkey and the United Nations (UN). Both Turkish and U.N. officials have tried to persuade Russia to extend the agreement once more.
But over the past few months, Russia has complained that the terms of the extension were not fulfilled.
