On August 13, the DRC Ministry of Health received the 51,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevria vaccine promised by the British government. According to the promoters of this initiative, these doses will be used in particular to ensure the second injections.

Senegal, for its part, received nearly 140,000 doses, once more from the United Kingdom. Jeune Afrique had confirmation that the doses had arrived at their destination on August 15, 2021.

In both cases, these deliveries took place within the framework of the Covax device which was responsible for delivering the doses. Managed by several international organizations, including WHO and Unicef, Covax is the preferred intermediary for vaccine donations to developing countries.

The first doses of vaccines once morest Covid were distributed in Ghana in February 2021 and since then shipments have been linked. For the year 2021-2022, Covax has announced the delivery of more than 640 million doses, intended for low-income countries.

The United States, which provides 75% of its vaccine donations through the Covax initiative, is the first contributor with a promise of 290 million doses of anti-Covid vaccines. The Biden administration, for example, delivered four million doses to Nigeria.

This is the first batch of 80 million vaccines donated through Covax

The UK comes second with 80 million doses. The 200,000 doses supplied by London to the DRC and Senegal are part of a wider commitment. Indeed, according to British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab, the country will in the coming days send three million doses to eleven African countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. “This is the first batch of 80 million vaccines donated through Covax,” said Dominic Raab.

The countries of the European Union, acting in concert, have promised 200 million doses, including 54 million provided by France.

The priority now is to move from promises to delivery. If since the beginning of the year Senegal has received a little less than 800,000 doses, coming from the United States, France and the United Kingdom, it still lacks 2 million to reach the set target of 20% of people vaccinated by the end of 2021. However, according to the American University John Hopkins, only 2% of the Senegalese population is now fully vaccinated.

The continent is lagging behind in terms of the distribution of vaccines once morest Covid-19. By way of illustration, only 1.3% of the Ghanaian population is fully vaccinated, once morest barely 0.2% in Cameroon. The first African country in the ranking is Morocco, with a vaccination rate above 30%.
