British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Tuesday that Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia‘s decision to seek asylum in Spain is “one that no politician should take” and is a response to “repression” in Venezuela.
In a statement released by the Foreign Office, Lammy said that the opposition leader’s departure from the country to seek political asylum in Spain comes after “months of repression and intimidation against opposition figures and civil society in Venezuela.”
London pays tribute to the millions of Venezuelans who voted in the July 28 elections and recalls that electoral authorities have yet to publish full results or “credible evidence” of President Nicolas Maduro’s victory, according to the statement.
“We remain deeply concerned by allegations of serious irregularities in the declared results,” Lammy said.
At the same time, he said that the data that has been made available to the public so far shows that González Urrutia obtained a majority of votes “by a significant margin.”
The Labour minister described the “current repression” in Venezuela as unacceptable and called for the defence of human rights and an end to arbitrary detentions in the Latin American country.
The United Kingdom, he stressed, continues to work with its partners towards a peaceful solution in Venezuela and believes that dialogue is the only way to ensure that the will of the citizens is respected.
