BRITISH protesters have condemned the killing of a Turkish-American activist in the West Bank by Israel and called on the US and UK governments to hold Israel accountable for the crime.

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American activist, was shot dead by Israeli forces on Friday (6/9) while taking part in a peaceful demonstration against illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank city of Beita.

Eygi, 26, a dual Turkish and US citizen, had been actively involved in solidarity movements supporting Palestinian rights. His death sparked outrage and calls for accountability from local and international communities.

An autopsy report showed Eygi was killed by an Israeli sniper‘s bullet to the head, Nablus Governor Ghassan Daghlas said on Saturday (7/9).

Protester Charlie Burt told Anadolu Agency that journalists, activists and anyone who shows support for Palestine are being targeted. “It was a peaceful protest that he attended and it is unacceptable that anyone was shot or killed because of that,” he said, referring to Eygi’s killing.

Burt also demanded that Israel be held accountable for the killing. “I think the UK and US governments need to hold Israel to account for his killing. It’s disgusting, frankly,” he added.

Asked whether the government should do more to prevent more killings, Burt said he believed the UK government was being too soft on Israel at the moment. While the UK government has recently suspended 30 arms licenses, Burt stressed that everything needs to stop, including F-35 parts. “We must sanction, deprive and boycott Israel completely until the genocide ends and Palestine is free,” Burt added.

Another protester, Vicki Narcin, said killing activists for opposing genocide was just another Israeli military practice. “This has to stop now. Stop arming Israel,” she said, adding that the UK should no longer issue export licenses.

Narcin added, “This is genocide, it violates international law, and in my opinion, they are war criminals.”

Israel has been pounding the Gaza Strip since a cross-border incursion by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023. In addition to killing more than 40,000 Palestinians since then, the military operation has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of starvation.
