Since November 21, a number of reports in the media report that two villages ofUgandaKasamba and Kyamayembe, in Kabira sub-county, Kyotera districtare affected by a “mysterious” illness causing at least 12 deaths.
Flutrackers has included on its site the information available to date.
These deaths were recorded over the past two weeks. The disease manifests itself as a progressively spreading rash, leading to death within a few days.
Investigations by the Masaka regional health team, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health teams ruled out Marburg disease, Ebola, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Rift Valley fever.
District health authorities also report that many residents have turned to local traditional healers, which complicates the management of cases.
On November 21, some media outlets claimed that an anthrax epidemic would affect Kabira sub-county and caused 14 deaths. But authorities rejected this hypothesis following inspecting three farms considered suspicious and receiving the results of tests carried out on samples taken from two sick people in the village of Kyebambe which were negative for anthrax.
According to some health sector officials, a similar illness had affected the district in July 2022. At that time the Ugandan Ministry of Health concluded that there were cases of cellulitis or “ettalo”. It seems that health authorities are moving towards the same hypothesis to explain the current epidemic.
Noticed
The media put online the photo of the palm of the hand of a recovering patient who reveals healing ulcerative lesions, which might suggest poxvirus disease. In 2022, Uganda reported six cases of mpox (two in Kisoro district among refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo and four in the city of Kampala). To date, Ugandan health authorities have not discussed this hypothesis in the current episode.
