Uganda’s health ministry said on Tuesday it had opened an investigation after a teenager developed adverse reactions after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

In a message posted on Twitter, the ministry said it was working with the National Medicines Authority for this investigation while the teenager, 14, receives medical treatment. This news comes as the ministry plans to vaccinate children aged 12 to 17 against COVID-19. This measure aims to strengthen the immunization of children against this fatal respiratory disease.

According to the ministry, no child will be vaccinated without the consent of their parents or guardians.

The ministry’s announcement comes as new cases of COVID-19 have started to rise in the East African country from levels recorded earlier this year.
