Uganda: Ebola epidemic almost under control, says WHO

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ebola epidemic in Uganda is almost under control and might be declared defeated in the coming days.

“The Ebola virus has not been detected in Uganda since November 27. If this situation continues and there are no cases by the beginning of next week, the epidemic will be declared over, “said Wednesday during a virtual press briefing from Geneva. , WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noting that this was “good news”.

On September 20, 2022, Ugandan health authorities declared an outbreak of Sudanese Ebola Virus (EVD) following a case managed at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in Mubende District was confirmed. But in December 2022, Uganda discharged its last known Ebola patient from hospital.

According to media reports, Kampala has lifted all Ebola-related movement restrictions, testifying to the progress made in stemming the spread of the virus. On the ground, the number of infections and deaths decreased following a virulent first wave.
