Detergents, softeners, dishwashing liquids, household cleaners… Many cleaning products contain allergens without mentioning them on their labels, a legal practice, but judged « inadmissible » by UFC-Que Choisir, Thursday October 24.

The association tested sixty cleaning products to identify the presence of allergens when their labeling is mandatory, above a certain threshold, and thirty-one for which this is not the case.

For cosmetics, manufacturers will be obliged to report the presence of these news substances likely to trigger allergic reactions from summer 2026, but this obligation does not concern, for the moment, cleaning products, underlines UFC-Que Choisir.

Deception about “hypoallergenic” products

Among the sixty products tested, twenty-seven “contain one or more of these new allergens”reports the association, and only one product mentions it on its packaging. The use of allergenic perfumes also concerns four products presented as “hypoallergenic”pour “sensitive skin” or « sensitive »notes the association, pinpointing a “lack of information” consumers, which is not contrary to the regulations.

“This opacity is all the more unacceptable as the list of new allergens has been known for a long time” for the cosmetics sector. The UFC-Que Choisir therefore asks “to immediately extend the labeling of new allergenic fragrances to detergent products” et “to strictly regulate mentions of the “hypoallergenic”, “sensitive skin” or “sensitive” type, in particular by prohibiting them in the event of the presence of an allergenic or irritating compound”.
