UFC-Que Choisir warns of the dangerous presence of bisphenols in baby products

In a study to be published in its May issue, the UFC Que Choisir warns regarding the presence of different bisphenols in baby products or containers used by future mothers. Although bisphenol A has been banned in the composition of baby bottles or bottles since 2015, other forms of this chemical substance would still be used in the design of plastic packaging.

Thus, the UFC Que Choisir tested several products and the finding is worrying: different bisphenols were detected in 6 out of 14 baby bottles and cups, as well as in 7 out of 12 teething rings. “While endocrine disruptors are more particularly harmful at the early stages of children’s development, it is scandalous that too many manufacturers have not yet taken measures commensurate with the potential risks induced by these compounds.

For a ban on all bisphenols

The latter also tested 12 cans and 11 different soda cans. Each time, traces of bisphenol were identified. However, as the UFC Que Choisir reminds us, the substance can reach the fetus if the future mother consumes exposed products.

Following this study, “UFC-Que Choisir demands that the French and European health authorities prohibit any use of bisphenols in food packaging and products intended for children”. The association indicates that only bisphenol A is currently banned in baby items by the European Union. But not in food packaging. In addition, 148 chemical compounds have been identified and the UFC is calling for the prohibition of the 34 most dangerous at a minimum.

Endocrine disruptors

Used for more than fifty years in the design of plastic, in 2017 bisphenol A joined the list of substances of very high concern established by the European Chemicals Agency (Echa). In France, ANSES (National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) already classifies it among endocrine disruptors since 2015. Bisphenols can therefore cause miscarriages, fertility problems, growth problems in children or even thyroid diseases.
