(Ouagadougou, March 13, 2023). The President of the Transition, Head of State Captain Ibrahim TRAORE granted an audience this followingnoon to the President of the Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), Abdoulaye DIOP.
The President of the UEMOA Commission indicated that he shared during this audience with the Head of State, a number of important files for the progress of the Union and the files concerning Burkina Faso.
This meeting was above all an opportunity for Abdoulaye DIOP to report to President TRAORE on the conclusions of the last session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of UEMOA, held in Abidjan in December 2022 and on the functioning of the Institution’s Court of Justice with the appointment of new judges, who took office last February.
“This opportunity allowed us to go around the economic news, to present to him the economic situation of our Union which is generally satisfactory, despite some tensions that we have in terms of budget deficits and slightly in terms of public debt” , said Abdoulaye DIOP.
He argued that this difficult economic situation is linked to the strong decisions taken by the Heads of State to support the populations in the face of the inflationary crisis that the WAEMU space has experienced, following the war in Ukraine and the dysfunctions of the channels. supply globally.
These measures taken to relieve the populations have impacted, according to him, the budget deficit and increased the debt ratio of the Member States. However, reassured Mr DIOP, the situation in the Union remains generally positive and manageable.
The President of the Commission also reported to the Head of State on the initiative taken within WAEMU in terms of security, namely the project relating to the interconnection and computerization of border police stations.
WAEMU took the opportunity to congratulate Burkina Faso for “the beautiful and perfect organization” of the 28th edition of FESPACO and renewed the Commission’s availability to support the authorities of the transition.
