UEFA has sanctioned the football associations of Austria, Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania and Serbia for racist and discriminatory incidents that occurred during some Euro 2024 matches held in Germany.

The federations will have to pay fines between 20,000 and 50,000 euros, according to a statement from the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

In addition, teams would also be banned from selling tickets to visiting fans for future official UEFA matches if another similar offence is committed over a period of two years.

Fines by federation

The most severe sanction was imposed on the Croatian federation, which was fined 50,000 euros for incidents involving its fans during matches against Spain, Albania and Italy.

The Romanian football federation will have to pay 40 thousand euros for the discriminatory behaviour of its supporters during the matches against Ukraine, Belgium and the Netherlands.

UEFA investigates chanting at Euro 2024

On 19 July, UEFA launched an investigation into Spain captain Alvaro Morata and player Rodrigo Hernandez for a possible violation of regulations during the Euro 2019 final.

According to local media reports, the players are said to have chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish” alongside their fans to celebrate winning the title.

The decision was made after the Gibraltar Football Association (FA) filed an official complaint to the European football body on July 16, describing the celebration by the Spanish team as “extremely provocative and insulting.”

The Gibraltar government, for its part, expressed its “disappointment” with the situation. “It is an unnecessary mixing of a great sporting success with discriminatory political statements,” the government said.

Gibraltar, a disputed territory

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located on a small peninsula at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It shares a border with Spain, a country that claims sovereignty over it.

On 17 June, UEFA announced an investigation into incidents of racism during the match between England and Serbia.

The body said the Football Association of Serbia was facing charges related to throwing objects and “provocative” messages, deemed “inappropriate” for a sporting event.

Another complaint

On June 20, the Serbian FA threatened to pull out of the European Championship over alleged fan chants during the Croatia-Albania match.

“It has been a long time since we have seen such an insult to a nation at a sporting event with cries that (its citizens) should be killed,” the Serbian FA said in a statement, urging UEFA to punish both teams.

The national team considered the fans’ chants to be racist and the match had to be suspended as soon as they began to be sung.
