The European Football Association (UEFA) accused Roma coach Jose Mourinho of using abusive and insulting language with an official, following the European League final match on Wednesday night.
The charge relates to an incident that took place in a car park following the match that ended with the Spanish team Sevilla’s victory on penalties over its German counterpart at the Puskas Arena in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
The incident witnessed the 60-year-old Portuguese coach, Jose, directing obscene words at the English referee who managed the match, Anthony Taylor.
Taylor had given a yellow card (a warning) to the Portuguese coach during the match, whose four rounds ended in a positive draw, with a goal for each team, before resorting to penalty kicks.
However, the two clubs (Seville and Roma) also face a number of charges due to the behavior of fans and players alike. Among the charges the two clubs face together are throwing objects, lighting fireworks and inappropriate behaviour. The Seville team faces an additional charge of invading the pitch, while the Roma team faces the charge of causing damage as well as crowding.
The UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee will take its decision in this regard in due course.
The Referees Committee of the Football Association of England expressed its shock at the “unwarranted and hateful” abuse meted out by English referee Taylor at Budapest Airport, following the European League final match that Taylor managed on Wednesday evening.
While leaving Hungary with his family, the English referee was harassed and shouted at Budapest Airport by angry football fans.
Budapest airport officials said an Italian national involved in the incident had been arrested and charged with intimidation.
Activists circulated on social media a video clip showing Taylor and his family being harassed by fans while they were at Budapest Airport. An altercation ensued as Taylor and his family disappeared from the scene through a safe exit.
After the match ended on Wednesday evening, and in a parking lot, Roma coach Jose Mourinho was seen with English referee Taylor, in a confrontation that witnessed profanity uttered by Mourinho.
A statement from Budapest Airport said: “The fans of the losing team [روما] They got to know the English referee while he was in the airport hall, where he was waiting for the time of the plane he was going to leave on.
And the statement added: “Thanks to the close cooperation between the airport workers and the police, whose presence was intense during the arrival and departure of the fans, the concerned authorities were able to intervene immediately and the English referee was escorted to a lounge for a break before boarding the plane safely, accompanied by police officers.”
The statement continued, “The Italian citizen involved in the incident was arrested by the police, and charged with intimidation, within legal procedures.”
The English Referees Committee said, in a statement: “We are aware of videos circulating on social media, in which Anthony Taylor and his family appear to be harassed and abused while at Budapest Airport.”
The committee added: “We are shocked by the unwarranted and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony, and his family, during his return from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final.” “We will continue to direct all our support to Anthony and his family,” the committee said.
The Premier League said it was “shocked and appalled by the unacceptable abuse” of Taylor and his family.
A Premier League spokesperson said: “No one has to suffer the unjustifiable behavior of Taylor and his family.”
The spokesperson added: “Anthony Taylor is one of our most experienced referees with a proven track record and we support him and his family with all our energy.”
Mourinho criticized English referee Taylor in a press conference. The Portuguese coach was then seen shouting and making sharp remarks while Taylor and other officials were riding in a minibus.
Portuguese Mourinho shouted twice the word “shame” in English before speaking in Italian.
The English referee had given yellow cards to 13 players – making this match the most yellow card match in the European League.
Of the 13 cards, seven went to Roma – a record for a final.
The referee counted more than 25 minutes of stoppage time during the four-game match, before going to penalty kicks.
