On that day, Udit Narayan was more than worried. Big singing opportunities were not being given and hence the state of mind was anxious.
In the midst of this anxiety and worry, when director and producer Nasir Hussain‘s son passed in front of Mansoor Khan‘s house, what happened was that he rang the bell of the house even though he didn’t want to. Aditya Narayan’s act was unintentional while passing through a busy Bombay highway. When the watchman came, he introduced himself to him, who said to wait, and then a few moments later, Adita Narayan was sitting in front of Mansoor Khan.
Mansoor Khan was well acquainted with Udit Narayan. It was the closing months of 1986 and in an era where it was customary to make films for cinemas, directors would test their skills for small-budget video films. Such films were released only on VHS. Udit Narayan sang two songs in Mansoor Khan’s video film ‘Umberto’. Musician Anand Milind gave him this opportunity, who in those days was struggling to make his name and position in the presence of big musicians. These two sons of musician Chatragupta were inspired by Udit Narayan’s singing while composing songs for the video film.
When Mansoor Khan inquired about the reason for Udit Narayan’s visit, he replied that he has another film project, so give him a chance. Mansoor Khan understood their worries and said with a smile, ‘Don’t worry, I am going to make a big film very soon.’
The lights of hope began to shine in Udit Narayan’s eyes because Udit Narayan, who traveled to Bombay from Besi, a small town in the Indian state of Bihar, was still wandering in the field of singing. He had been in Bombay for about nine to ten years. How could he forget the days when he used to go around different studios to get singing voice in films. He was fond of singing from his parents but the desire was to earn such a name that the villagers would be proud of but for him every passing day was full of pain and struggle.
Fed up with Udit Narayan’s frequent rounds, composer Rajesh Roshan gave him his first opportunity in 1980 in ‘Anees Beis’. Udit Narayan sang only two or three lines in the song ‘Mil Gaya Mil Gaya’ but it was a great honor for him to have his favorite singer Muhammad Rafi in the song, who not only encouraged Udit Narayan but also Advised them: ‘Keep working hard, don’t give up.’
Usha Mangeshkar, another co-singer of this song, was especially happy when Udit Narayan told that she has also received formal training in classical singing.
After this first opportunity Udit Narayan got, he intensified his struggle. During this period, Rajesh Roshan also recommended him to other musicians like RD Burman, Bipi Lehri, Kalyanji Anandji and Ram Lakshman and he would get a song or two in one or the other film but no one with his name. There was no such song, which became his identity or which he would proudly refer to others.
When Mansoor Khan heard Udit Narayan’s singing in his video film ‘Umberto’, his father Nasir Hussain was also his singing brother, who advised him to keep Udit Narayan’s voice under control. This was the time when Mansoor Khan stood behind the camera for the first time and planned to portray cousin Aamir Khan in ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. He had told his father that since his film will be about youth, there will be youth in every aspect of it.
This is the reason why he thought of choosing Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla apart from singers like Alka Yaganak and Udit Narayan and even musician Anand Milind who was seeing the first spring of his career.
Mansoor Khan gave the good news to Udit Narayan that he is going to make his first film very soon. Therefore, if you are thinking of going back to the village, put it out of your mind. Udit Narayan thought that he would get only one or two songs, but Mansoor Khan made it clear to him that Udit Narayan would be the background singer for all the songs on Aamir Khan.
Adita Narayan’s happiness had no abode. When Udit Narayan came back from Mansoor Khan’s house, he had full confidence in him and was thanking him for the good he had done by reaching Mansoor Khan himself. At least now they have a shelter. As promised, Mansoor Khan chose Udit Narayan for background vocals in ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. This was the first film in which all the songs were sung by Udit Narayan.
The lyricist of ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ was Majroh Sultanpuri who poured the essence of his whole life into every song while looking at a young team. When Udit Narayan was called for recording, the first song that composer Anand Milind recorded was of anger, ‘Dan Sochu Zara Rahe.’ After that, ‘Akele Hai To Kya Gham Hai’ and then ‘O Mere Hum Safar Ek Zara Intar’ and then at the end ‘Papa Kahein Hai Biga Naam Kareo.’
Udit Narayan had so much understanding during this period that which song would give a response. That’s why he was sure that the poetry and music of the songs are touching hearts and that’s why all these songs will be hits.
When the film was completed and released in theaters on April 29, 1988, it did not do enough business initially. In such a situation, when Udit Narayan went to the beach of Bombay in Syria, he met Tahir Hussain, Aamir Khan’s father, who told Udit Narayan that the film should become a hit so that his son Aamir Khan could enter the film world.

In fact, like Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ made them all superstars at once.
