Dakar, June 1 (APS) – The Association of Retired Women of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (AFRUCAD) on Wednesday presented a donation of braille production equipment intended to support blind students, noted the ‘APS.
This donation in the amount of 4,500,000 FCFA is made up of computers, papers and a printer.
The donation ceremony took place in the presence of the rector of Ucad, Amadou Aly Mbaye, the rector of EL hadji Ibrahima Niass University of Sine-Saloum, Bert Vermant, in charge of Affairs at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Ndeye Coumba Kane Touré, sponsor of this event.
Afrucad also awarded on this occasion fifteen (15) elite girls from different faculties, including two with disabilities and one from the University of EL hadji Ibrahima Niass.
”These girls will receive a grant of 100,000 FCFA and a diploma of recognition to motivate them”, declared the president of Afrucad, Khady Séne Camara.
”It is an action of high social significance carried out by Afrucad”, for her part welcomed the godmother of the event, Ndeye Coumba Touré Kane, rector of the University EL hadji Ibrahima Niass of Sine-Saloum. She has long pleaded for the maintenance of girls in schools and especially in scientific fields.
”Girls like the visually impaired provided with better conditions can excel in all disciplines and be equipped to meet the challenge of science and technology of our dear country and continent”, she said.
She also proposed the implementation of strategies for guiding girls towards scientific and technical courses by making them more attractive to them and allowing them to acquire concrete experience very early on.
The Rector of UCAD, Amadou Aly Mbaye, thanked all the partners of Afrucad in particular the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He welcomed the choice of the sponsor of the event, “a scientist very committed to everything that concerns society”.
He urged Afrucad to continue its charitable actions towards society and Ucad and its various segments.
The Chargé des Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Bert Vermant, for his part welcomed the initiative of Afrucad in favor of blind students.
”The Netherlands remains very committed to this possibility of usefulness, equality and equity (…) for the achievement of a harmonious, inclusive and profitable development for students and teachers,” said he said.
The Association of retired women from Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar intends to continue the program to improve the living and study conditions of students with disabilities at Ucad in order to find social and educational solutions to their difficulties.
It plans to create a crèche and a childcare center for the university community and continue the steps for the UCAD-IPRES partnership within the framework of the University Clinic project.
