Taiwan’s billionaires have become more numerous and richer. UBS released the 2023 Billionaires (with assets of more than US$1 billion) report yesterday (1st) and found that Asia has the largest number of rich people, with mainland China having the highest number, while Taiwan has the fourth highest number of rich people in Asia, and their wealth has increased. Nearly one-third, the annual increase in wealth is tied with Singapore’s for the highest in Asia.

UBS released its 2023 Billionaires Report yesterday, updating the statistics on the number and assets of billionaires in the world in 2023. It found that the wealth of billionaires has begun to rebound slightly since the decline after the epidemic. According to statistics, the number of billionaires in the world increased by 7%, from 2,376 to 2,544, and wealth rebounded by 9%, from US$11 trillion (approximately NT$349 trillion) to US$12 trillion (approximately NT$380 trillion).

Yang Jingyi, co-head of UBS Wealth Management Asia Pacific, found that the number of wealthy people in the Asia-Pacific region is still the largest in the world. The overall number of billionaires has increased from 922 to 1,019, and the total wealth has increased by 8.1% to reach US$3.7 trillion. Among them, mainland China has 520 billionaires, ranking first in Asia and second only to the United States.

The report revealed that markets with fewer billionaires, such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan, saw their wealth increase by nearly a third. According to statistics, the total wealth of Taiwan’s billionaires increased by 31.2%, reaching US$122.4 billion. The growth rate is tied with Singapore’s for the highest in Asia. On average, each billionaire in Taiwan holds US$2.6 billion in wealth, exceeding US$2.3 billion in 2022.

In 2023, the number of billionaires in Taiwan will increase from 39 to 46, ranking fourth in Asia. There are 520 people in mainland China, 153 people in India, and 68 people in Hong Kong. It exceeds 41 people in Singapore, 38 people in Japan, and 32 people in South Korea.
