INDONESIA won the first match of the 2024 Uber Cup. The Uber Merah Putih team finished the opening match in Group C with a 5-0 lead.
In the competition which took place at the Chengdu High-Tech Zone Sports Center Gymnasium, China, Saturday (27/4), Indonesia’s first point was contributed by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. Gregoria won over Yeung Sum Yee in two straight games 21-15, 21-11.
“I’m happy to be able to play well and give points for my team. But I didn’t expect that today Hong Kong would play their second singles once morest me. Since yesterday I studied their game from their first singles so I was a bit surprised. I’m grateful I was able to beat him,” said Gregory.
“Just trying to think one point at a time, I didn’t want to think too much because I was afraid it would disrupt my game even more. It also seemed like at the start of the match I mightn’t handle the tension so I made a lot of my own mistakes,” he added.
The pair Lanny Tria Mayasari/Ribka Sugiarto in the second match added points following crushing the resistance of Yeung Nga Ting/Yeung Pui Lam 10-21, 21-10, 21-17.
The Indonesian women’s team then sealed victory thanks to Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo who beat Saloni Samirbhai Mehta with 21-14, 21-12.
In the fourth match, it was Meilysa Trias Puspitasari/Rachel Allessya Rose’s turn to win over Lui Lok Lok/Ng Wing Yung via rubber game 21-16, 20-22, 21-18.
Indonesia swept to victory when Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi took a two-game lead 21-16, 21-17 over Liang Ka Wing. (Dhk/Z-7)
