Daily life in the city of Baltimore in Maryland, United States changed early on Tuesday, March 26, when a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, collapsing its structure over the Patapsco River.
That morning the police were alerted that the Dalí cargo ship that had left the port of Baltimore had lost control and was heading towards the bridge. The agents mobilized to stop traffic and make sure that there were no cars crossing the bridge at the time of the collapse. .
This prompt action saved several lives including that of Uber driver Gayle Fairman.
Fairman received a call at 1:16 a.m. Tuesday to pick up a cyclist at the Amazon facility in Sparrows Point. The destination was Brooklyn, just on the other side of the puente Francis Scott Key.
When she arrived to pick up the passenger, it took him a few minutes to board the Uber and begin his journey.
Fariman tells how when she reached the edge of the bridge she was stopped by the police, without having any idea what was happening, she rolled down her window to ask the police why they mightn’t pass and that’s when they told her that the bridge had collapsed.
“If the passenger had not been delayed a little, we probably would have crossed the bridge at the time of the collapse” Fairman commented, ensuring that she feels very grateful and happy to be still alive.
This tragedy left six Hispanics dead, including two Guatemalans, two Mexicans, one Salvadoran and one Honduran, of which only two bodies have been located.
