The landing in Tierra del Fuego from the company Uber generated the reaction of the associations of taxis, remis agencies and other types of transport that require regulations from both the deliberative councils and the provincial Legislature.

The multinational platform began operating yesterday in the cities of Ushuaia, Río Grande and Tolhuin, barely twenty days after announcing that it intended to start its activities in the district and that it would only do so in the capital of Tierra del Fuego, in response to the demand derived from tourism.

The company began registering drivers and passengers Through its mobile application, and from one day to the next, it announced the start of its benefits.

“We noticed an interest in the service and since in Tierra del Fuego there are no specific regulations for this activity, we decided to launch the use of the platform, understanding that its legality is out of the question”, explained the director of Comunication of Uber for the Southern Cone, Juan Labaqui, in statements to the Tierra del Fuego media.

For their part, the local carriers, who had already spoken out against this possibility, they accelerated contacts with the legislative institutions so that progress could be made in some type of regulation of the activity.

A group of them was received the day before by provincial legislators from the General Legislation Commission, to whom they expressed the importance of “preserving sources of employment” and the risk of “implementing platforms that bring together individuals to carry out the work of carriers professionals, subject to all kinds of rules and controls,” they said at the meeting.

The chairman of the legislative committeeFederico Greve, explained after the meeting that the carriers admitted deficiencies in the taxis and remises, and that the risk of not colliding with the regulations emanating from the municipalities was also discussed.

“Urban passenger transport is exclusively regulated by the municipal jurisdiction, as established by the Constitution of the province and by the municipal charters. Any provincial regulation must take into account the issue of powers”, Greve analyzed.

For its part, the Ushuaia Deliberative Council will resume a session today where it could reaffirm the validity of ordinance 5,283 that prohibits the use of platforms for the transport of passengers and would even decide to increase the fines for possible offenders, sources from the agency announced.

A project that the councilors are analyzing establishes fines of $978,000 to $1,630,000 for drivers who transport passengers without authorization and for “those who are discovered offering, or managing supply tools for said services”.

Meanwhile, the Rio Grande Municipality issued a statement yesterday advising “Use only authorized transport” that “they have the corresponding documentation and the necessary security conditions for users”.

“Transiting in authorized transport makes it possible that, in the event of any eventuality or accident, the neighbors can make the pertinent claims,” the official part emphasized.

However, Uber ignores local regulations, such as laws and ordinances, as long as they prohibit the service, and only accepts that it is regulated by any means.

“Legality is determined by national regulations. The basic aspect is the contract between the parties that are on the trip. That is why there are many cities in the country where Uber works without problems. If the service is regulated, we will accept the conditions accordingly,” argued Labaqui.
