Students from the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (UAZ) demanded that the authorities of said university guarantee attention to the “mental health problem” that affects medical students, who suffer “physical and psychological violence due to part of the teaching staff”, as well as “work harassment and precarious conditions” of study.

In a statement released last Wednesday, the students grouped in the Front for Student Mental Health and Rights (FSMDE) pointed out that the problems of psychological and physical violence once morest young people “are not new or exclusive to one state,” but result of the “accumulation of years of permissiveness of violence in the medical training system”.

After emphasizing that in the last three years there have been the same number of suicides of students of said career in the UAZ -the most recent of them occurred the previous week-, the students emphasized: “We say NO to the normalization of violence in hospitals and academic training spaces”.

In an interview with La Jornada, Yutzin de la Rosa González, spokesperson for the FSMDE, stressed that despite the “repeated warnings” regarding the negative effects of bullying medical students by teachers, the UAZ authorities have only launched actions “insufficient”, such as talks given by psychology interns, which “are not of the expected quality”.

The researcher on violence in medical training indicated that he has developed a measurement system for this phenomenon, which analyzes 16 types of aggression, according to which one in every 3 students in this career experience at least one form of violence during their studies, especially all psychological and verbal.

“Being a hierarchical system, in medicine there are many pejorative adjectives, they describe you as a bad doctor and they punish you physically and psychologically. The specialty where 2 of the 3 suicides (of UAZ students) have occurred is pediatrics, where there are even teachers who say ‘if you are going to commit suicide, leave a letter, to continue making fun of you’” following his death, he denounced.

After emphasizing that the psychological effects of bullying teachers are a phenomenon that also occurs in other universities, De la Rosa indicated that a march was held this Thursday in the state capital and a meeting was held with the rector of UAZ, Rubén Ibarra Reyes, who was presented with a nine-point request sheet.

One of the most important, indicated the student, is the creation of a specific department that identifies cases of teacher violence once morest students and carries out acts of prevention and attention to those affected, as well as sanctioning the aggressors, which currently They are difficult to put into practice.

According to the FSMDE spokesman, the authorities committed themselves at least two years ago to formulate a protocol for dealing with this type of case, “even with signed commitments, and they have not yet done so.”

At the meeting this Thursday, the rector of the UAZ commented that in order to dismiss a teacher, the regulations of the house of studies indicate that the sanctions are for those who commit “non-ethical” acts in their class, which “is provided to a very ambiguous interpretation and there is no way to define if someone is deserving of a suspension or a dismissal. Everything depends on the interpretation of the Court” of the University.

De la Rosa announced that the second meeting with the authorities of the institution will be on Friday, June 2 at 6:00 p.m., and although some of the dissatisfied “remain with a thread of hope of being attended to, I believe that forceful actions are still needed because those that exist today are indecisive and ambivalent”.

At the next meeting, “we hope that he will provide the department with resources to follow up on these cases and not hold the students responsible for solving this problem. It is not normal for a person to want to die, and not addressing this is being part of the problem. It is not a new issue nor is it because it is a ‘glass generation’: it is a need for urgent attention”.
