Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, said that the UAE is a success story in investing in nuclear energy in order to develop environmentally friendly productive sectors through the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, which supports green sectors by providing electricity free of carbon emissions. Enabling companies to obtain clean energy certificates, as well as enabling these companies to obtain financing related to environmental governance and society, which is estimated at $30 trillion globally, and is expected to double by 2030.

Al Hammadi stressed the pivotal role of nuclear energy in ensuring energy supplies to sectors that require huge amounts of energy, in addition to its pioneering role in reducing the carbon footprint of sectors where this is difficult at the global level.

This came during Al Hammadi’s participation in a panel discussion on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Conference, which concluded its work in London yesterday, and was titled “Achieving partners’ goals in reducing the carbon footprint using nuclear energy,” in which both Angela Wilkinson from the World Energy Council and the Director of Nuclear Technologies Engineering participated. At Microsoft, Todd Noe, and Core Power CEO, Mikal Poe.

During a gathering of nuclear energy leaders, experts and executives at this symposium; Al Hammadi highlighted how nuclear energy can secure energy for sectors that require huge amounts of this energy in a sustainable manner, with a focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, data and information centers, and sectors that are witnessing significant and rapid digital growth, pointing out that information and data centers alone consume up to 5% of global energy supply, and this percentage will increase with increasing digital growth.

During the panel discussion, Al Hammadi spoke regarding the pivotal role of nuclear energy in achieving climate neutrality, and its great ability to enhance the global process that aims to transition to environmentally friendly energy sources.

He said: “Through close and urgent international cooperation, the use of nuclear energy can be expanded to meet energy challenges, and by recognizing the importance of nuclear energy as a key contributor to reducing the carbon footprint in upcoming talks at events such as the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). “The nuclear energy sector can be given the opportunity to play its main role in achieving climate neutrality.”

A platform for innovation

The development of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plants in the UAE serves as a platform for innovation, research and development in new areas, including mini-modular reactors and medium-sized nuclear power reactors, which form an essential part of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation’s future projects, along with next-generation reactor technologies. Barakah stations also pave the way for the development of new types of environmentally friendly fuels such as hydrogen.
