Abu Dhabi, September 25 / WAM / His Excellency Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority, confirmed that the United Arab Emirates plays an influential and pioneering role in the issue of climate change in the aviation sector regionally and globally, especially within the group of member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Al Suwaidi said, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the UAE is considered one of the first countries in the region to realize early on the importance of dealing with this vital issue, especially since the aviation sector is a major player in the climate change issue, and a pillar of the UAE’s economy. Its contribution is more than 13% of the country’s gross domestic product and is expected to rise by 170% over the next twenty years. It also provides regarding 777,000 jobs in the country’s markets, so the sector’s growth must be sustainable and low-carbon to achieve the country’s ambitious climate goals.

He added that the state’s top priority was to evaluate and develop the required policies to support the long-term economic operation of sustainable aviation fuel facilities in the country and align with the ambitions of low-carbon fuel and sustainable fuel for domestic and international aviation to remove carbon from aviation, and from this standpoint, the national roadmap for sustainable fuels was developed. In cooperation between the relevant government agencies and in partnership with the private sector, an ambitious goal has been set to reach, by 2030, an annual production capacity of up to 700 million liters of sustainable fuel, which also creates broad investment opportunities in the aviation and energy sectors, in the range of 7 to 9 billion dollars for the production of facilities. And the required facilities, which will provide regarding 18,000 new job opportunities, in addition to supporting research and development operations related to accelerating sustainable fuel technology in the country.

The Director General of the General Authority of Civil Aviation indicated that the country’s hosting of the Aviation and Alternative Fuels Conference in its third edition is evidence of its leadership in this file, as this event is the largest international gathering of leaders in the aviation sector and industry, manufacturers, investors and experts in industries related to low-cost aviation fuels. Carbon and sustainable fuels.

He explained that the conference aims to create international consensus under the umbrella of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on mechanisms for transitioning towards a balanced system for producing aviation fuel and ensuring the growth of the aviation sector in a way that takes into account the balance between economic and environmental requirements.

He stated that the third edition of the conference is of particular importance as it will constitute a turning point in the global aviation industry and aviation fuel production in accordance with the understandings that aviation and energy leaders will come up with, as decision makers and officials in the aviation, energy and environmental sectors from 191 countries around the world will participate to agree on future solutions. To accelerate the production of clean fuel, which will contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation sector and achieving an economic qualitative shift, and serving the ambitious global aviation goal in the long term of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

He pointed out that the fuel file in the aviation sector is a key focus in international efforts to deal with the challenges of climate change, given that it is responsible for regarding 2% of carbon emissions in the world, and as demand for air travel continues to grow, this number is expected to rise in the coming years. This makes finding ways to reduce the environmental impact of the sector, and all its related industries, more important than ever before. Therefore, the decisions that will emerge from this conference will bring regarding a real change in the future of the civil aviation sector and will be a major and influential focus in global efforts related to the climate neutrality agenda and development goals. Sustainable.

The Director General of the General Authority of Civil Aviation said that the UAE realized early, more than 14 years ago, the importance of adopting the sustainability file and taking into account the environmental impact of the aviation sector, and it took many important steps to raise its level of readiness to deal with this file, and presented the general environmental policy for the civil aviation sector and the state plan. In reducing emissions, it was followed by a detailed plan that was classified in 2018 as one of the best plans in the world, in addition to the state’s membership in the Committee for Environmental Protection in the Aviation Sector, affiliated with the International Civil Aviation Organization, and its commitment to implementing the “CORSIA” plan aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. On board national carrier aircraft.

He pointed out that the country’s aviation sector announced last year its commitment to the zero climate neutrality resolution by 2050, and the country also announced the national road map for sustainable fuel for aircraft, noting that all these efforts have strengthened the country’s weight on the global stage in the issue of sustainable fuel for the aviation sector, and we We view the third edition of the Aviation and Alternative Fuels Conference as a turning point in the production and operation curve of the civil aviation sector at the global level.

Regarding the files and topics that will be discussed during the conference, Al-Suwaidi said that the conference will discuss 4 main axes related to legislation, policies, financing, and methods of application or implementation, which were previously prepared during two preparatory meetings at the level of senior technicians and officials in the aviation industry from the member states of ICAO. With the aim of holding consultations between countries to focus on the potential outcomes of the conference with regard to establishing a global framework for clean energy in aviation under the umbrella of ICAO, and seeking to bring views closer to achieving progress and consensus and coming up with practical and implementable decisions during the conference.

He stressed that dealing with climate challenges is no longer an option for countries, but rather a necessity to ensure the continuity of growth in light of the rapid transformations the world is witnessing and the challenges that impose themselves on the global economic scene, especially following recovering from the “Covid-19” pandemic. The climate change issue has become one of Priorities of government action agendas in countries of the world today.
