Kumarakom-India, on April 20, / WAM / The UAE participated in the second meeting of the Development Working Group for the year 2023 within the development path of the Group of Twenty, which was held under the presidency of the Republic of India in the city of Kumarakom in the state of Kerala in India.
The meeting discussed the two basic drafts of the action plan within the framework of efforts to accelerate progress in the sustainable development goals, and the views and proposals of countries regarding the group’s directions, in line with the priorities of India’s presidency of the G20.
The UAE team participating in the meeting included His Excellency Rashid Al Hamiri, Director of the Foreign Aid Affairs Department, and Dr. Kamal Al Yamahi from the Development Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The meeting was attended by members of the Group of Twenty and invited countries, partners affiliated with the group, and representatives of many international organizations specialized in international development.
During the first day, the country’s delegation participated in the sessions on data for development and women’s participation in it, as well as in green development, where capacity-building mechanisms in the field of using data to serve the development goals of developing countries were reviewed, and India’s vision as chair of the G20 towards empowering women and girls to reach their full potential By changing the narrative of “women’s development” to “women-led development” and the most important challenges facing women and limited financing and lack of access to capital, technology and education for small and medium enterprises, and the efforts of the G20 seeking to forge international understanding and create momentum for a strong multilateral approach In order to bring regarding effective and just transformations in developing countries.
The state delegation also participated during the activities of the second day in the sessions on accelerating progress in achieving the goals of sustainable development, coordination and partnerships, which dealt with a presentation of the Green Development Pact, which includes providing support and accelerating the efforts of developing countries to re-mitigate risks, including sustainable consumption, adaptation to climate change, and reducing Carbon footprint, industrialization with decarbonization, and the G20 call on international institutions such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to conduct an assessment of the role played by the G20 in the past few years towards responding to crises and the successes it has achieved.
During the participation in the activities of the sessions, the delegation stressed the importance of taking into account the differences between rural and urban and different social and economic backgrounds when dealing with action plans related to the development of women, bridging the gender gap and giving more discussions regarding financing action plans and their sources and the participation of the private sector. Experiences of providing assistance to developing countries in the field of providing clean energy and how to apply successful experiences, especially with regard to funding sources, and how to overcome these challenges.
It was also called to seize the next opportunity at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP28 in 2023, which will be hosted by the UAE in November, and which is the largest global conference of heads of state, government and stakeholders on climate and environmental issues, which seeks to find solutions. Climate challenges facing the planet, in order to present the results of the G20 summit related to climate change and its impact on development.
