UAE’s Commitment to Human Rights: Updates and Progress

Abu Dhabi, September 11, 2017 – The Permanent Committee for Human Rights held its sixteenth meeting, headed by His Excellency Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to His Highness the President of the State, Chairman of the Committee, and with the participation of members of the Committee from the relevant authorities in the country, and the National Authority for Human Rights established in accordance with the Paris Principles. During the meeting held at the headquarters of the Presidential Office, His Excellency was briefed on the progress of the results of the work of the working group emanating from the committee charged with studying the recommendations received by the state during its review of its fourth national report within the framework of the forty-third session of the working group on the universal periodic review of human rights during the month of May 2023.
During the meeting, His Excellency stressed the UAE’s keenness to strengthen its cooperation with United Nations human rights bodies, mechanisms and committees, including the Universal Periodic Review mechanism, which is considered an important international mechanism that effectively contributes to the exchange of information, expertise and international best practices in the field of human rights.
His Excellency added: “The UAE’s acceptance of most of the recommendations contained within the framework of the fourth periodic review of human rights confirms the state’s determination to continue developing its national efforts in the field of human rights, taking into account that many of the recommendations that were accepted by the state are considered already implemented on the ground.” Especially with regard to strengthening relevant national legislation, institutions and policies.”
It should be noted that the Permanent Committee studied the recommendations received by the state during its review session of its fourth national report during the month of May 2023 at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The committee also prepared a document of the state’s response to those recommendations, which included the state’s sorting of the recommendations that received acceptance and support and the recommendations that received It has been noted that it requires further study, and the Human Rights Council is expected to adopt in October 2023 the outcomes of the review of the fourth national human rights report.
