UAE to plant 10 crore mangrove trees within eight years

Abu Dhabi – A project to make the UAE environment-friendly by planting 10 crore mangroves within eight years has started. Mangroves are being planted as part of the National Carbon Sequestration Plan 2030. The Ministry of Environment and Climate has started a new project in the roadmap announced to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050. The important announcement was made at the UAE Climate Change Council held on Jubail Island in Abu Dhabi. The council members were invited to the lessons of nature by organizing a field tour through the mangroves of Jubail Park.

The Council stated that nature is the best solution to address environmental challenges. Mangroves have a unique ability to mitigate and protect once morest the effects of climate change. The council stated that mangroves are being expanded because they can absorb and sequester up to four to five times more carbon than tropical rainforests.

The project will be implemented in four phases: producing mangrove seeds and saplings, locating planting sites, planting seeds and saplings in selected locations, and monitoring the amount of carbon sequestered by mangroves.
