UAE proposes establishing temporary international mission to establish order in Gaza

United Arab Emirates – The UAE proposed, on Thursday, establishing a temporary international mission at the official invitation of the Palestinian government, “entrusted with establishing law and order and laying the foundations for a qualified government that will pave the way for the unification of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under one legitimate Palestinian authority.”

This came according to what was announced by the Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy, according to a statement by the UAE Foreign Ministry, coinciding with Western and Arab discussions regarding the visions of the day after the war in the Gaza Strip, which has been witnessing a devastating Israeli war for 10 months, and Arab and international efforts to stop it.

Al Hashemi explained that during the past ten months, the UAE transported 39,756 tons of urgent supplies to the sector via 8 ships, 1,271 trucks and 337 flights, including 50 airdrops.

She stressed that “the UAE believes that returning to the tragic situation that prevailed before October 7, 2023 (the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza) cannot achieve the sustainable peace that the Palestinians, Israelis and everyone aspire to.”

She said, “The UAE believes that establishing stability and security in the Palestinian territories and the region as a whole begins with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all prisoners and hostages.”

She added that “establishing security and stability and ending human suffering should begin with the establishment of a temporary international mission at the official invitation of the Palestinian government, led by a new prime minister with high competence, credibility and independence.”

The new Palestinian government must work “in accordance with the highest international standards, be prepared to deal with the necessary reforms to meet the challenges facing the Palestinian people and achieve their legitimate aspirations for independence, state-building, development and stability, and be able to bear the responsibility of rebuilding Gaza,” according to Al-Hashemi.

According to the Emirati minister, “The mission is tasked with achieving an effective response to the crisis that the residents of the Strip are suffering from, in addition to working to establish law and order, and laying the foundations for a qualified government that paves the way for the unification of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under one legitimate Palestinian authority.”

She stressed “the need for Israel, as the occupying power, to play its role in achieving this international vision in accordance with international law and human rights standards, as Gaza cannot be rebuilt if it continues to live under siege, and if the Palestinian Authority is not allowed to assume its responsibilities there, and to stop withholding its funding, in addition to the need to stop building settlements and violence in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.”

The Minister pointed out “the importance of the United States playing a pivotal and effective role in these efforts, whether in the Gaza recovery phase or in the efforts made to revive the prospects for peace,” stressing that “the firm and explicit American commitment to achieving the two-state solution and supporting Palestinian reforms are pillars of the success of the international mission’s mission.”

Israel insists on “eliminating the movement of the factions and their absence from power, amidst rejection from the Palestinian movement, and efforts by mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the United States to establish a new truce to stop the war in the Strip.

The Palestinian arena has been suffering from political and geographical division since 2007, as the factions movement and the government it formed control the Gaza Strip, while the West Bank is run by governments formed by the Fatah movement led by President Mahmoud Abbas.

Since October 7, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding more than 129,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women, and leaving more than 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children.

Tel Aviv continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
