ABU DHABI, 12 September / WAM / The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in Germany, in cooperation with the German-Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce and the Guidehouse Consulting Company, organized a workshop on “Hydrogen Strategies and Carbon Markets”, hosted by the capital, Abu Dhabi, within the framework of The Emirati-German partnership in the field of energy and climate, which the two sides signed at the beginning of 2017.
The workshop was attended by His Excellency Engineer Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Mohammed Al Kaabi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Energy, Water and Future Energy Sector, Engineer Nawal Al Hinai, Director of the Future Energy Department from the UAE side, and His Excellency Alexander Schönfelder, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany. To the UAE, Anna Jacobs Schlethof, Head of the North Africa, Near and Middle East Department at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, His Excellency Christoph Klarmann, Acting Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the UAE, Oliver Ohmes, Executive Director of the Joint German-Emirati Council for Industry and Trade, and a number From experts and stakeholders from both sides.
The workshop aimed to enhance integration and coordination between the two countries to determine future trends, develop a clear plan to create unique opportunities to accelerate joint cooperation, and discuss how to confront the challenges of developing renewable energy sources and hydrogen.
The workshop participants reviewed overviews of the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050 in the UAE, in addition to the National Hydrogen Strategy of Germany.
The workshop included presentations on carbon trade expectations and carbon markets, in addition to an interactive panel discussion on designing the carbon market, and ways to strengthen relations between the two countries to benefit the two friendly peoples and support their goals of climate neutrality.
The discussions come within the framework of the efforts of the UAE and Germany to shape the future of the energy sector, especially hydrogen, and to support efforts to advance this vital sector in the two countries, by setting development plans, visions and strategic directions to enhance their global leadership.
The two sides’ participation in the “COP28” climate conference, which the country will host at the end of next November, was discussed.
His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, said in his speech: “The UAE and Germany share a firm commitment to sustainable development, a passion for innovation, and a keenness to adopt future trends related to clean energy, especially hydrogen, and our cooperation and exchange of knowledge and experiences Success in the field of sustainable energy will have a clear impact on achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.”
His Excellency added: “The workshop provided an ideal platform to exchange experiences and explore potential synergies in hydrogen and carbon trade… Such meetings will support the investment system in research and development in the field of renewable energy, and the development of new and innovative technologies to improve production efficiency and reduce emissions,” explaining that Germany, as a global leader in the field of technology, is a strategic partner and several initiatives have been implemented under the umbrella of the Emirati-German partnership in the field of energy and climate.
His Excellency stressed that the launch of the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050 is a major step to pave the way for a strong hydrogen economy, and for the UAE to be the global center for the new economy, and at the same time reflects our goals for climate neutrality, and our ambition to enhance the country’s position as a global producer and exporter of clean energy.
Anna Jacobs-Schlethof, Head of the North Africa, Near and Middle East Department at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, said: “I would like to congratulate the UAE on the completion of its national hydrogen strategy 2050, and we are honored to cooperate together to achieve the national targets related to our efforts in the hydrogen sector, and that Strengthening the position of the hydrogen market will play a prominent role in supporting bilateral trade and enabling sustainable economic growth.”
It is worth noting that the UAE Hydrogen Strategy 2050 enhances the UAE’s position as a global producer and exporter of clean energy, and will contribute to creating thousands of jobs by 2050, and reducing emissions in emission-intensive sectors by up to 25% by 2031. It includes concrete steps to create two oases hydrogen by 2031 and increasing their number to five oases by 2050, which contributes to supporting its leadership in this field, enhancing local production capabilities and accelerating the global hydrogen economy.
