UAE: Gargash comments on referring a group of Bangladeshis to trial after demonstrating against their country’s government

On his account on the “X” platform, Anwar Gargash wrote: “The UAE is a state of institutions and a system that protects everyone within a model based on law, diversity and security.”

Gargash added: “The decision of the Attorney General to investigate and refer the Bangladeshi protesters to trial after they caused riots came within a legal context to preserve our model and not allow the problems and issues of other countries to be exported to our society.”

The UAE Attorney General on Saturday ordered an immediate investigation into a group of Bangladeshi residents after they gathered and rioted in a number of streets during a protest against their country’s government.

According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), a team of Public Prosecution members began investigating the accused who were arrested.

According to the investigation results, the Bangladeshi detainees are accused of committing the misdemeanors of “gathering in a public place and demonstrating against their country’s government, with the intent to riot and prevent and obstruct the implementation of laws and regulations.” They were also accused of “obstructing the interests of individuals, harming them, exposing them to danger, preventing them from exercising their rights, obstructing traffic, attacking and damaging public and private property, deliberately disrupting means of transportation, and calling for and inciting such demonstrations.”

The Bangladeshis are also accused of filming and posting audio and video clips of the acts on social media.

According to Emirati media, these protests inside the UAE coincided with the spread of demonstrations in Bangladesh, which have been ongoing since the beginning of this month in protest against the quota system that allocates up to 30% of government jobs to relatives of veterans who fought in the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971.

According to UAE law, these acts constitute crimes that affect state security and disrupt public order, and could endanger the interests of the state, which prompted the Public Prosecution to detain them pending investigations.

The UAE Attorney General ordered the defendants to be referred to an urgent trial, calling on everyone residing in the country to abide by its laws and not to be led by such calls and actions, as they constitute crimes that have a serious impact on society and are severely punished for their perpetrators.
