His Excellency Omar Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, told the Dubai Assembly for Generative AI that countries need a new approach to governing AI.

“I think the current global discussion regarding AI governance is not a good start. Instead of trying to govern the technology, we can govern the use cases,” he said.

During the assembly, attended by more than 2,000 participants from large technology companies and consultancies such as Microsoft, Deloitte, PwC and IBM, Dubai Future Foundation launched the Dubai Generative AI Alliance, a new alliance of technology companies, to help Dubai to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies and form one of the most advanced and effective technology-enabled governments in the world.

Khalfan Belhoul, Executive Director of DFF, called on companies and innovators to be part of the alliance, which will aim to develop innovative technology pilots, leveraging AI, the metaverse and Web3.

The government of Dubai has also launched ‘Dubai AI’, a superior AI-powered urban generative digital search service. The city-wide digital platform will offer comprehensive information and services, covering health, business and education, to residents and visitors. It will transform government services, according to what was heard in the assembly.

The assembly also learned how the international banking sector might benefit by up to US$400 billion from the generative AI boom.

The global platform listened to experts from international technology companies and consultancies. PwC reported that automation in the workplace is imminent, with generative AI likely to be able to perform everyday tasks, such as booking flights and generating reports autonomously, at scale within the next 18 to 20 months.

Deloitte’s top digital expert said nuclear fusion, climate action and drug discovery will be some of the key beneficiaries of generative AI, while the industrial and pharmaceutical sectors are among those adapting most quickly to the emerging technology.

Adel Al Redha, Chief Operating Officer at Emirates, said that by November the airline “will empower cabin crew to take advantage of the [IA generativa] through training in complex models.”
