In a historic announcement on the first day of the World Government Summit (WGS) 2024, the Abu Dhabi Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) revealed a pioneering initiative that aims to facilitate global access to technological solutions cutting edge. The newly launched “ATRC Global Technology R&D Platform” serves as a channel for countries to leverage the UAE’s technological expertise in order to address their own challenges.
As the driving force behind Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s advanced research and development (R&D) ecosystem, this initiative underscores ATRC’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth and global prosperity. In an era of rapid technological transformation, the platform seeks to close the technological gaps experienced by nations around the world, offering solutions suited to their pressing needs.
To initiate applications through the platform, ATRC is allocating $200 million in funding to accelerate innovation, particularly for emerging and developing nations. By committing to absorb resource and research costs, funding facilitates the development of sophisticated technological solutions by enabling these nations to keep up with the latest advances.
The ATRC Global Technology R&D Platform invites applications from eligible governments, organizations and stakeholders around the world, with a priority on cooperation and inclusion. Through a rigorous evaluation process, initiatives aligned with the platform’s mission will receive support in six priority sectors: Aerospace and Space; Food and Agriculture; Health care; Security and Protection; Sustainability, Environment and Energy; and Transport.
His Excellency, Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the ATRC, highlights the profound global impact of the initiative, stating: “Our commitment is to empower all nations with the means to thrive in this technology-driven world. ATRC stands ready to partner with countries, leveraging our technology expertise to address their challenges and drive collective progress in the AI-powered era.”
For almost four years, ATRC has developed a robust R&D ecosystem, with more than 850 researchers from more than 70 countries. It has built an entire ecosystem that systematically supports all crucial phases of a technology’s development journey. Its entity ASPIRE recruits international talent through grand challenges and global competitions, and identifies technology gaps with its clients. The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) focuses on applied research with purposeful outcomes and houses its leading researchers and scientists, while VentureOne commercializes its solutions, taking R&D products and services from the lab to the market.
The ATRC offers a spectrum of capabilities spanning AI and quantum, autonomous robotics and cryptography, as well as advanced materials, propulsion and space, by targeting technology needs from conception to innovation.
From identifying an entity’s technological pain points to developing customized R&D solutions, ATRC orchestrates the complete lifecycle of technological advancement for companies and countries in need of support. Situated at the global crossroads, it extends its reach to entities around the world, facilitating innovation on a truly international scale.
Al Bannai will speak at a plenary session at the World Government Summit, highlighting his views on the evolution of AI and emerging opportunities.
Dr. Ray O. Johnson, Executive Director of ATRC’s International Applied Research Branch at TII, expressed optimism regarding the fund’s potential to catalyze innovation and said, “Through this platform, we will help identify untapped innovations globally by unleash the power of transformative technologies and encourage economic growth.”
The ATRC calls on nations to cooperate and contribute to the technological landscape around the world. For more details regarding the ATRC Technology R&D Fund, applicants can contact the Council via ASPIRE at aspireuae.ae.
“We are here to identify technological gaps and facilitate sophisticated solutions that countries need to explore for a resilient future,” said Stephane Timpano, Executive Director of ASPIRE.
In a similar position to support the wider adoption of advanced technologies, last year the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) was one of the first to open source its large, world-class language model, Falcon 40B, under the Apache 2.0 license, royalty-free.
