UAE and Saudi Arabia agree on cooperation program in nuclear control

This week, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the UAE concluded a two-day official visit to the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the two sides exchanged views and views on ways to enhance cooperation in nuclear energy regulatory issues.

This is the first visit of the Saudi partner, as the delegation of the UAE regulatory authority was headed by Christer Victorson, General Manager. The visit comes within the framework of the agreement concluded between the government of the United Arab Emirates and the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2019 to cooperate in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The Saudi Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority gave a presentation on the latest developments regarding the Kingdom’s nuclear energy program, as Saudi Arabia intends to build nuclear power plants, as well as introducing its emergency operations center and establishing an early warning network. On the other hand, the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation presented a presentation on the developments of the UAE nuclear program.

The UAE and Saudi parties concluded the visit by agreeing on a cooperation program in the areas of knowledge exchange, including the development of the regulatory framework, licensing and inspection, capacity building, nuclear safety, nuclear security, preparedness and emergency response, research and development, and others.

Victorsen said: “The delegation of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation expresses its happiness to visit the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to see its achievements in the framework of its work to control the Saudi nuclear program.”
