The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the entity responsible for developing the sector in the country, has signed three memorandums of understanding with Chinese institutions specializing in peaceful nuclear energy as part of the Gulf state’s efforts to promote the low-carbon sector.
The UAE is hosting the Climate Summit (COP 28) this year and seeks to obtain 6% of its energy needs from nuclear sources as part of its plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, and the UAE has previously announced that China will be a major partner in this plan.
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation said today, Sunday, that it had concluded the three memorandums of understanding with the “Nuclear Energy Operations Research Institute, the China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas, and the China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation,” according to Archyde.com.
She added that the agreements include cooperation “in nuclear energy operations, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, nuclear fuel supplies, and investment.”
Upon completion, the Barakah plants, which are being built by the Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), will include four reactors with a total capacity of 5,600 MW, which is equivalent to regarding 25% of the peak demand in the UAE.
