UAE affirms support for efforts to reach a “comprehensive ceasefire” in Gaza

UAE – UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan confirmed on Tuesday evening his support for efforts to reach a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

This came during a phone call between the Emirati minister and his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken, according to a statement by the UAE Foreign Ministry, in light of the ongoing war in the Strip since October 7, 2023.

The call comes amid efforts by mediators Egypt, Qatar and the United States to complete a new truce based on a proposal by US President Joe Biden, which he put forward at the end of last May, amid differences between the Palestinian Hamas movement and the Israeli government.

The phone call discussed “efforts to reach a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire and enhance the humanitarian response to the needs of civilians in the Gaza Strip.”

During the phone call, Bin Zayed affirmed “the UAE’s support for the American efforts made in cooperation with the active parties in the international community to reach a sustainable ceasefire that contributes to protecting the lives of all civilians.”

He pointed out that “the worsening humanitarian suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip necessitates working at an accelerated, coordinated and sustainable pace to meet their urgent needs and provide them with the necessary humanitarian assistance.”

The two sides also discussed “developments in the situation in Sudan and their humanitarian repercussions.”

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti), have been waging a war that has left about 15,000 dead and about 8.5 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
