Derived from the increase in demand for spaces in careers related to medicine and gastronomy, the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) would expand enrollment for these careers in the next calls.
The rector of the UABC, Luis Enrique Palafox Maestre, said that they are contemplating building a building in the Faculty of Tourism and Marketing for the gastronomy degree, which is one of the most in-demand on the Tijuana campus.
“There is a glimpse of an increase in the enrollment offer for the gastronomy educational program, but we have not yet quantified it,” he indicated.
Another of the “big” challenges that the institution has pending is the high number of applications at the state level to enter medical careers, commented Palafox Maestre.
He pointed out that they are analyzing the possibility of continuing to increase the offer in nursing, dentistry and particularly medicine careers, for which more clinical spaces are necessary.
The rector mentioned that the University Center for Health Education (CUES), a space that previously functioned as a Government Center and was donated by state authorities, opened 1,070 places for medical careers in 2022.

“The demand for medical careers exceeds the offer that the university has, particularly in the area of medicine, nearly 3 thousand applicants in the last call did not get a place,” he noted.
This despite the fact that the UABC is one of the public universities that offers the most spaces in this career at the national level, only behind the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL).
