U23 African Cup of Nations: One nation disqualified

2023-05-18 00:23:03

Following the appeal filed by the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), the Gabonese national team was disqualified from the African Cup of Nations (CAN) U23.

Eliminated by Gabon (0-1, 1-0, 6-7 pens), Cameroon had lodged an appeal once morest the Panthereaux. This appeal had targeted winger Floriss Djave. The latter is accused of double identity and of being 25 years old rather than his official 19 years.

But today, the disciplinary jury of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided. He announced the disqualification of Gabon for the 2023 edition as well as his suspension for the following edition, according to Afrikfoot. And this, less than 2 months before the CAN U23, which will take place from June 24 to July 8, 2023, in Morocco.

It will be up to the organizing committee of the competition to determine if it is indeed in Cameroon to replace the Panthereaux for the final phase in group B alongside Egypt, Mali and Niger.

CAF, however, considered “inappropriate” the accusation of “falsification of age” brandished by Cameroon. The governing body of African football confirms that Floriss Djave was indeed born on July 29, 2003 and therefore eligible with the U23 selection.

Only, the Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot) was found guilty of having inadvertently reversed his date of birth with that of another player by registering him in the CMS system of CAF. Therefore, although it did not commit fraud, Gabon is sanctioned for its administrative error. Fegafoot has announced that it will appeal this sanction.
