With a convincing 8:1 (3:1) victory over Croatia, Austria’s U19 footballers started the second qualifying phase for the European Championships in July in Lithuania. Nicole Ojukwu was particularly impressive with a penalty brace and Alisa Ziletkina, who scored three times towards the end. With the victory, the ÖFB team took their first big step towards the finals.
Hannah Fankhauser gave coach Hannes Spilka’s team the lead in the first minute. Ojukwu countered Valentina Dubravica’s equalizer (38th) with two goals from the penalty spot (41st, 44th). Five minutes following the restart, Chiara D’Angelo made it 4-1, and in the 69th minute Valentina Mädl made it 5-1.
Substitute Ziletkina then made her big appearance, contributing a hat trick to the final score of 8-1 with goals in the 76th minute and twice in stoppage time.
In the parallel game, Ireland, Austria’s next opponent on Saturday (12.30 p.m.), beat Iceland 4-1. Only the winner of the group of four qualifies for the European Championships.
