Organized during the U13 regional finals of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine League in Gujan-Mestras, a reforestation action financed by the carbon contribution of the FFF made it possible to plant 50 trees and raise awareness among 80 young people of the functioning and benefits of urban wooded areas.

Football leads to everything, including planting trees! On May 13 and 14, during the Ligue Nouvelle-Aquitaine (LFNA) U13 regional finals in Gujan-Mestras (Gironde), 80 curious and motivated volunteers came together thanks to the Football Écologie France (FEF) association. and the district council, in the wood of Chante Cigale, near the infrastructure of FC Bassin d’Arcachon.

The objective was threefold: primo rejuvenate this remarkable urban wooded area (classified EBC*), by planting 50 young “umbrella” pines under cover, in order to quickly compensate for the disappearance of part of the afforestation. Secondly diversify the composition of the space in order to favor the reception of biodiversity. Thirdlymake children and the local population aware of the benefits of urban wooded areas, including the reduction of heat islands, the preservation of water and the improvement of the carbon footprint.

It is precisely within the framework of its carbon contribution operation for the France-Denmark match of June 3, 2022, led by Game Earththat the FFF supported the operation. “In connection with the LFNA, we wanted to involve the participants in the regional finals in this reforestation project. Thanks to the city’s services, an educator, a parent and a player from each team were able to help root 50 trees, with enthusiasm and motivation.”, rejoices Pierre Lalot, head of the Bordeaux office for FEF. To perpetuate the impact of the plantation, two educational panels installed at the entrance to the wood will serve as a support for the information of local residents and pupils of neighboring schools.

Have a positive impact on football events

The “umbrella” pine plan

The ten species of “umbrella” pines were planted according to a system allowing comparison of their performance over time: mortality, growth, sensitivity to insects and diseases, associated biodiversity, etc. The experimental system occupies an area of 2,160 m2: 25 blocks with 12 plots of 9 plants each occupying 4 m2. A plan of the experimental device was drawn up before planting and then listed in the “green spaces” department of the municipality of Gujan-Mestras.
