The U.S. State Department announced on the 27th that the United States will provide another $250 million worth of military assistance to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft ammunition and artillery ammunition.

According to the statement, the new round of military assistance includes anti-aircraft ammunition, other air defense system components, additional ammunition for high-mobility rocket systems, 155 mm and 105 mm artillery ammunition, anti-armor ammunition and more than 15 million rounds of ammunition. This is the 54th military aid to Ukraine since August 2021 by the Biden administration.

The U.S. Department of Defense issued a statement stating, “These capabilities will support the most urgent needs and enable the Ukrainian military to defend its sovereignty and independence. The United States’ leadership role is critical to maintaining the current coalition of approximately 50 allies and partners supporting Ukraine. To Ukraine security assistance is a smart investment in our national security.”

The aid is provided through the “presidential drawdown authority,” a U.S. foreign policy tool that allows the U.S. president to order the Department of Defense to quickly deliver weapons stockpiles to foreign allies in crisis, such as the 2022 presidential election. Through the president’s appropriation authority, he provided US$345 million worth of military weapons to Taiwan.

The Biden administration is urging the U.S. Congress to pass a $110 billion aid package to meet the security needs of Ukraine, Israel and other countries.
